The Boat House Stratford

Recent renovation work at The Boat House in Stratford-upon-Avon included replacing the cast iron guttering system that had protected the iconic building for decades.

The Boat House in Stratford-upon-Avon is a charming riverside restaurant located on the River Avon. This historic building, dating back to the late 1700s or early 1800s, originally served as a warehouse supporting local trade.

Today, it houses a restaurant upstairs and Avon Boating on the ground floor, offering boat hire and tours. The Boat House has become a cherished landmark in Stratford-upon-Avon, celebrated for its rich history and picturesque setting.

Preserving the historically significant building

The Boat House has been a part of Stratford-upon-Avon’s history for over two centuries and it was important to use materials that would match its traditional aesthetic while providing reliable protection against rainwater damage.

Amax Construction, experienced builders in Stratford-upon-Avon, were commissioned to undertake the renovation. The extensive works included reroofing the building, intricate lead work on the roof lantern, and replacing deteriorated timber columns and horizontal beams on the balcony and roof.

The exterior timber received a complete repaint, rejuvenating the building’s appearance.

Choosing the right materials

Choosing the right materials is an important part of any historic building renovation project. After careful consideration, Amax Construction opted for traditional cast iron gutters from ARP’s Britannia cast iron guttering range to complement the existing cast iron downpipes.

ARP supplied unpainted, 5″ plain half round cast iron gutters to Amax, primed and ready for painting. Solid State Decorators painted the gutters and timber on-site for a seamless match with the existing features.

We were impressed with the quality and durability of ARP’s cast iron gutters. They provided a perfect fit for the building, both in terms of performance and aesthetics. Working with ARP was a pleasure and their team was highly knowledgeable, providing helpful advice throughout the project. – Adrian Kendrick, Director of Amax Construction
